5 out of 5 stars Head & Beard!   July 30, 2009

I use Mane n Tail shampoo and conditioner on my head and beard. I also perform the "dry application" after I towel off. My beard has never been softer! You can get a quarter-gallon for like five dollars! I love you, Mane n Tail!

4 out of 5 stars I love it..........   January 31, 2009

I've been using this conditioner and shampoo for about a month now. At first I was skeptical about using a hair product intended for horses. However, having grown tired of my pixie cut, and also having tried numerous other things to grow out my hair quickly, I despairingly asked a friend (who has the most gorgeous long, glossy-brown hair I've ever seen) how she kept her hair so long and healthy.

She told me she doesn't use anything but Mane n Tail products. Well, as I mentioned before, I was skeptical. A horse shampoo? A CHEAP shampoo? But, being desperate for a solution to my over-fried, over-dyed, straw-like short hair, I went and purchased both the shampoo and conditioner. Now, as someone else has already mentioned, the bottles are quite large and a little hard to manage, especially if you're in a hurry. And I too was surprised by the fact that the shampoo is quite a bit thicker than the conditioner. But I lathered and rinsed, then applied the conditioner, etc. (I find that if you "work" the shampoo between your palms for a few seconds it spreads throughout your hair a little easier.)

When I stepped out of the shower and blow-dried my hair, I almost couldn't believe my eyes (or fingers). My hair was soft, shiny, and bouncy. My split ends were still there, but they weren't half as noticeable as before. The rest of the day I could hardly keep my hands off my hair.

Its been a month now and my hair went from mid-ear length to well below chin-length. For someone whose hair does NOT grow quickly (i.e. ME) that's nothing short of a miracle. I'll never use anything but Mane n Tail again. It might not work for everyone, but it sure worked for me.

4 out of 5 stars Frugal and Non-Allergenic   December 21, 2008

My hair grows very quickly - I routinely grow it out to my waist, donate it to Locks of Love and then start over again. Because I know the hair needs to be very sturdy, I try to take good care of it and wash it with something that is gentle but does its job well.

I also seem to get allergic reactions to some conditioners - which is odd because in general I don't think I'm allergic to anything else. There are several conditioners I've tried which make my skin tingly and sensitive. I've therefore been hunting for a shampoo / conditioner pairing that does not cause a reaction.

I heard from two different people that I should definitely give the Straight Arrow Mane and Tail Conditioner a try. This is sold in large containers at many discount stores, as it's literally meant for horses. These people said that it worked wonderfully well for their own hair as well.

At least where I have found it, it only comes in a large size which is unwieldy to manage in a shower. I realize its large size is great for washing large horses - but for us small humans, it's a bit large to hold. The pouring spout is on the small size, so holding the heavy container upside down and squeezing it to get the liquid out is also tricky. I would have to take off the main lid and pour out a portion into a smaller container.

The liquid itself is yellow in color and is somehow THINNER than the shampoo is. So where the shampoo is thick on your hair and doesn't necessarily get into every nook to clean it, the conditioner which SHOULD cling and coat your hair and stay there for a few minutes to soak in seems to drip off quite easily. Not only that, but with the other conditioners I've tried over the years, when I come out of the shower I am able to take a wide-toothed brush and gently comb out my hair without much trouble. With this conditioner it is tangled and I have to be very careful to pull slowly so that I do not break the hair. So it doesn't seem to detangle very well.

Now, that all being said, I didn't have any reaction to this conditioner at all. It does provide some slight conditioning value. And it's cheap, sold in large volumes.

I could see someone buying the large containers, pouring it out into smaller ones and using those. It's a great frugal way to keep your hair conditioned. That's just a lot of work for me for a conditioner that seems too thin. I have several other options I use instead which are thicker, come naturally in smaller containers and do a good job conditioning. So as much as I think this is a cool idea, and perfect for some, I don't use this myself now.

5 out of 5 stars Great leave-in conditioner   October 26, 2008

I've been using this as a leave-in conditioner for years and am thoroughly pleased. It's helped to make my hair stronger and keeps my curly hair from becoming frizzy and out of control much better than all of the frizz reducing products on the market. Absolutely love it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Leave-on Conditioner   October 10, 2008

This works great as a leave-on conditioner. Instead of using a moose or a gel, I put a small amount on my palm and apply it on my hair. With a comb and a dryer, it holds my hair for the whole day. It does not feel or look greasy at all. The bottle is huge which will last forever for my use. A great deal for the price.
